Many people just try to copy workouts off of the internet and then make it their own. Although the idea is simple and sounds like it will work, very few actually end up sticking with the workout. What worked for one person does not mean it will work for you.

It is for this reason that people hire personal trainers to help them with their ab workout and fitness goals. Using a personal trainer is a great way to get started if you know very little about your body and the correct and most effective ways of working out. They also help motivate you because you have an actual appointment with them. When you have an obligation you are more likely to actually go workout.

A great use of personal trainers is to get a workout plan that is designed specifically for you. The best way I have found to do this is to not just got to one trainer and ask or pay for help.

Instead I became a member of Workout Pass. This site is a collaboration of personal trainers from all over the world. They work together to plan ab workout routines specifically designed to meet your own goals.

This means that you will have effective abdominal workouts that target your specific needs with no extra fluff put into the middle. Having a specialized plan means that you will be staying away from the basic exercises everyone knows how to do, and instead will be doing the most effective best ab exercises. It's definitely worth taking a look.

If you do not want to go the personal trainer route, another very effective way to increase your knowledge is to read ab books for an ab workout. The problem with a lot of books out there is that most of them are just the same regurgitated information over and over, so the value of what you read drastically diminishes after your first ab book.

This is why I recommend The Truth About Six Pack Abs. It is by far the best flat stomach and six pack abs book I have ever read.

Unlike most books, Mike Geary is actually a certified nutrition specialist and a certified personal trainer. He is a very reputable source and actually writes a book with value because he did not copy other books.

His book gives you the best ab exercises in great detail with pictures and descriptions. It also provides nutrition plans for all types of personal tastes, teaches you your anatomy to better understand how to lose belly fat, and so much more. Take a moment to read my review about it.

A Sample Ab Workout

Not everyone knows what an abdominal workout consists of. All workouts will vary based on your goals as well as whether you are trying to get a flat stomach or six pack abs. When you are trying to lose belly fat and weight you are going to be doing a lot of high intensity sets. If you are going for building abdominal muscle you are going to be using large amounts of weights with less reps.

The best way for you to figure out your ab workout is to focus on what exercises you feel give you the best workout. Lets say that you thought the russian twist, plank, and exercise ball crunch gave your abs the best workout.

Then using these exercises you would create a chart or list that tells you how many sets and reps you are going to do for each of the exercises. Keep in mind that when working out your mid section it is important to try to never drop below the 15 rep per set mark.

When putting it all together your plan might look something like this:

Keep in mind that in order to see continuous improvement, you will want to bring your workout results from what you did last time. The reason for this is because every time you go into the gym, your goal should try to out-do what you did last time.

Whether it is doing one extra rep per set, going up in weight, or doing the entire workout in less time, these goals will motivate you to stay focused and try harder!
